Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Khalil Ben Youssef has lauded the professionalism of Tashreeq Morris after the striker emerged from the wilderness to spark Amakhosi’s crucial 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United.
Before Sunday’s cameo at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in the Betway Premiership, the 31-year-old had endured a frustrating campaign, tallying just a single minute of action in a brief Carling Knockout Cup appearance. However, introduced with the game deadlocked, Morris needed just minutes to ghost in at the back post and convert Glody Lilepo’s cross—netting his first official goal for the club and his first in over 15 months.
Addressing the media after the match, Ben Youssef revealed that Morris’ sudden re-emergence was the result of a long-term conditioning program managed behind the scenes.
“Morris is one of our players; he has been working very hard in training sessions,” the Tunisian tactician explained. “We were waiting for the right moment, and I think this was the right moment to introduce him to the team.”
The coach was quick to credit the technical support staff for keeping the forward match-ready despite his lack of game time. “I have to say thank you and congratulations to the entire technical team. There are people working behind the scenes to prepare these players.”
The victory didn’t just end Morris’ goal drought; it officially catapulted Chiefs back into continental football. With 51 points on the board—their highest tally in six years—Amakhosi have now guaranteed a spot in the 2026/27 CAF Confederation Cup.
Ben Youssef emphasised that the inclusion of fringe players like Morris is part of a broader strategy to manage the squad’s physical load.
“We try to keep consistency, but sometimes there is a risk of injury, so we should make rotations,” he added. “We showed that any player we ask to come in is ready to fight for the badge, for the team, and for the fans.”
Amakhosi now look to conclude their season on a high with an away trip to AmaZulu FC, followed by a home finale against Chippa United.
