World Cup: ‘I deserve a spot in Morocco squad’ – Tawfik Bentayeb

Former Morocco youth international Tawfik Bentayeb has made his intentions clear regarding representing the Atlas Lions at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The attacker, currently on loan at Troyes from Union Touarga, has undoubtedly taken his game to another level this season in the French second tier.

Following a remarkable 2025-2026 campaign with Troyes, Bentayeb established himself as one of the biggest individual sensations in Ligue 2.

A product of the Mohammed VI Football Academy, Bentayeb finished as the league’s top scorer with 18 goals from 28 games, playing a key role in Troyes’ promotion to Ligue 1.

His consistency and clinical finishing also earned him a place in the UNFP Team of the Season and a nomination for Ligue 2 Player of the Year.

Bentayeb harbors a major ambition of joining the Moroccan national football team for the FIFA World Cup to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and USA.

With a combined 12 caps for the U-17, U-20 and the U-23 sides, the 24-year-old no longer hides his dream of joining the senior squad after his impressive season.

Tawfik Bentayeb is yet to make senior appearances

“Of course I’m thinking about it, because I think I had a good season.I believe I’m a legitimate candidate for a place in the national team.

“Ultimately, it will depend on the coach’s decisions. I’ve lived this season with this idea in the back of my mind. We’ll see what happens.”

His performances have clearly caught the eye of European scouts with rumours linking him to Villarreal CF, RC Lens and FC Schalke 04 ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

The announcement of Morocco’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected on May 21st by coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

Morocco are paired against record holders Brazil, Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
