Nwaiwu joined the Black Sea Storm from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC in January and has since made six league appearances for the side, instantly establishing himself as a regular contributor for the contenders.
Turkish Süper Lig side Trabzonspor have been dealt an injury setback after confirming that defender Chibuike Nwaiwu will spend time on the sidelines following a thigh injury.
The Nigerian centre-back sustained the injury during the team’s 3-1 league victory over Fatih Karagümrük at Papara Park on Friday. Despite the injury concern, Nwaiwu delivered an impressive performance during the match, scoring two goals before being forced off the pitch late in the game.
His contribution played a key role in helping the Black Sea Storm secure an important three points in the Süper Lig title race.
Nwaiwu’s evening began on a high note as the young defender scored twice to give his side a comfortable advantage.
However, the promising display was cut short when the 22-year-old signaled discomfort and was substituted in the closing stages of the match. Norwegian defender Mathias Løvik replaced him seventeen minutes from time as the coaching staff opted not to take any risks.
Another Nigerian international, Paul Onuachu, also found the back of the net during the game, further underlining the impact of the team’s African players in the victory.
The win helped the club maintain momentum in the Turkish top-flight competition while strengthening their position among the league’s leading teams.
Following the match, the club released an official statement confirming the extent of the defender’s injury.
Medical examinations and an MRI scan revealed bleeding and swelling in the inner thigh muscle group of his left leg.
According to the statement, the medical team has already begun treatment and rehabilitation procedures in order to help the player recover as quickly as possible.
While the club has not yet provided an exact timeline for his return, such injuries typically require careful recovery to prevent further complications.
The Nigerian defender joined the Turkish club during the January transfer window from Austrian side Wolfsberger AC.
Since his arrival, he has quickly established himself as an important part of the defensive unit.
In a short period of time, the 22-year-old has already made six league appearances and impressed supporters with his physical presence, composure and ability to contribute in attacking situations during set pieces.
His brace against Fatih Karagümrük further highlighted his potential and growing influence within the squad.
The coaching staff has praised his work ethic and adaptability since arriving at the club earlier this year.
The injury comes at a crucial moment in the Süper Lig campaign as the club continues to compete for strong positions in the league standings.
Losing a key defensive option could present a challenge for the coaching staff as they navigate the upcoming fixtures.
However, the squad still possesses several defensive alternatives capable of stepping in while the Nigerian international focuses on recovery.
Supporters will be hopeful that the young defender can return to action soon and continue building on his promising start in Turkish football.
For now, the primary focus remains on rehabilitation and ensuring that the defender returns to full fitness.
The club’s medical staff will closely monitor his progress in the coming weeks before determining when he can safely resume training with the rest of the squad.
If recovery progresses well, the Nigerian defender could still play an important role during the latter stages of the season.
His early performances have already demonstrated that he has the potential to become a key figure in the team’s defensive setup for years to come.
