Galatasaray edge rivals Beşiktaş via Osimhen header

Victor Osimhen helped Galatasaray continue their match towards a successful Turkish Süper Lig title defense on Saturday by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Istanbul rivals Beşiktaş.

The Nigerian goal hunter met Leroy Sané’s cross with a diving header in the 39th minute to make the difference and keep another Istanbul rival, Fenerbahçe, at arm’s reach on the league table.

As expected, the match was a fiercely contested battle and the visitors were somewhat fortunate to escape with all three points. In a first half of few opportunities, Osimhen’s header proved to be a crucial moment.

Beşiktaş proceeded to dominate the second half and created numerous chances but goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır performed brilliantly to keep the league leaders in front. It was a frustrating match and for the hosts, who remain in fourth place and are likely to drop further beyond the top-3 clubs.

Osimhen boosts his league total to 11 goals in 18 matches, adding a further 7 goals in UEFA Champions League action this season. The schedule remains busy for Galatasaray, who will host the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 duel with Liverpool on Tuesday.
