CAF Champions League: AS FAR lose 2nd leg but advance to final

Rabat-based club AS FAR will return to the CAF Champions League final for the first time in over forty years after advancing on Saturday with a 2-1 aggregate victory over fellow Moroccan club RS Berkane.

RSB, who won the CAF Confederation Cup title last season, won 1-0 in Saturday’s second leg but it was not enough to overcome a 0-2 first leg defeat in Rabat.

The hosts of the second leg did pull a goal back through Yassine Lebhiri’s 57th minute penalty kick. The experienced attacker converted his spot kick after forward Paul Bassene was dragged down by Anas Bach early in the second half.

But despite looking like the more dangerous team, the “Orange Boys” failed to find a second goal. A strong defensive performance from AS FAR, who possess the best defensive record in Morocco’s top flight Botola Pro, was enough to secure passage to the final.

The club from the capital will compete for Africa’s top club football prize for the first time since winning the competition in 1985.
