Cardoso breaks down the secret to Sundowns’ Champions League consistency

Mamelodi Sundowns stand on the precipice of a second consecutive CAF Champions League final, but for head coach Miguel Cardoso, the club’s systematic presence at the business end of the competition is no accident.

As the Brazilians prepare to host Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis at Loftus Versfeld Stadium this Saturday (15:00 CAT), Cardoso has pointed to a deeply embedded internal culture as the catalyst for their sustained success.

Sundowns carry a slender 1-0 lead into the semi-final second leg, following a disciplined performance in Rades last Sunday. While Espérance—four-time African champions—arrive in Tshwane desperate to overturn the deficit, they face a Sundowns side that has transitioned from being “entertainers” to “continental heavyweights.”

The Cardoso Philosophy: Values vs. Resources

For Cardoso, maintaining this elite level for three consecutive semi-final appearances requires more than just tactical acumen; it requires a specific set of club values.

“There are many things needed to achieve such a performance. You first need to develop a strong will, a strong desire, a strong commitment, and a strong mindset,” Cardoso explained. “It has to do with values that you have to develop inside a club.”

However, the Portuguese tactician was pragmatic, acknowledging that high-minded values must be matched by high-quality personnel. Cardoso credited the club’s hierarchy for their ability to “seduce and attract” elite talent capable of sustaining this standard.

“There are no values that are not sustained on quality,” he added. “Throughout these last generations, there has been capacity from the club to… pay players that can sustain the level that can arrive at this point. Usually, we say luck needs a lot of work. To appear once can happen; to be there systematically is another thing. It speaks to the greatness and the level that has to be there permanently.”

Stepping into Greatness: The Player’s Perspective

The pressure of wearing the yellow and blue jersey is something defender Kegan Johannes understood long before his move from SuperSport United. For Johannes, the transition into the Sundowns environment was a lesson in the “sleepless nights” required to stay at the top.

“As a player, coming from outside… you already know what is expected from you based on the history and philosophy of the club,” Johannes stated. “You know the club has been systematically competing in the Champions League, and that doesn’t come overnight. There’s a lot of hard work—sleepless nights, studying, watching games, consistently trying to improve. It’s just a lot of work, dedication, and discipline.”

While Sundowns have dominated domestically, the “Second Star” remains the ultimate obsession. Since their lone triumph a decade ago, the Brazilians have faced several late-stage exits, most notably losing the final to Pyramids FC last season.

This year feels different. Having already eliminated Stade Malien in the quarters and holding the advantage over a heavyweight like Espérance, the pressure is on Cardoso’s men to finish the job in front of a home crowd.

With Grant Kekana suspended for the second leg following his red card in Tunis, the spotlight falls on the likes of Johannes to maintain the defensive steel that has become a hallmark of the Cardoso era.
