Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has declared his ambition to secure more silverware for Nigeria after winning the 2025 Unity Cup in London.
Chelle guided Nigeria to their third Unity Cup invitational tournament following a thrilling 5-4 penalty shootout win over the Reggae Boyz of Jamaica on Saturday night.
Super Eagles twice took the lead in the Unity Cup final, with goals from Moses Simon and Samuel Chukwueze, but their opponents equalized on both occasions. The match ultimately went to extra time after 90 minutes.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, the three-time African champions converted all five of their spot kicks while Jamaica could only manage four from their five attempts. Expressing his joy, Chelle said he's optimistic that the Unity Cup will be the first of many trophies for the team.
“In reality, this is my first trophy as a coach. When I was a player, I won trophies, but this is my first as a coach. I hope with this, I can bring more trophies for Nigeria,” said Chelle.
The Malian also had a lot of praise for debutant Benjamin Frederick as he was impressed by the Brentford defender's performance.
“Benjamin Frederick was good. He was very calm and composed. Technically, he’s close to perfect — especially when it comes his touch on the ball and making strong passes.”
Super Eagles will now turn their focus to the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers where they currently sit fourth in their group, needing to significantly improve their standing.
