Kaizer Chiefs seal CAF Confederation Cup spot with late show in Polokwane

Kaizer Chiefs have officially booked their place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday night.

The win sees Amakhosi return to continental football for the second time in a row, securing a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership with two games to spare. Chiefs moved to 51 points, leaving fourth-placed AmaZulu FC (44 points) unable to catch them, as Usuthu can only reach a maximum of 50 points.

After a cagey affair that looked destined for a stalemate, the match burst into life in the final ten minutes.

Tashreeq Morris, making a fairy-tale return to action, proved to be the hero. Coming off the bench in the 62nd minute for Flávio Silva, Morris netted his first goal of the season in the 86th minute. The striker showed elite predatory instincts, poking home a left-footed shot from close range following a pinpoint cross from the lively Makabi Lilepo.

Chiefs doubled their lead in stoppage time when Lilepo was fouled inside the area by Vuyo Letlapa. Young sensation Mfundo Vilakazi stepped up and coolly converted the resulting penalty, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner to spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.

CHIEFS RETURN TO THE CONTINENT AFTER SEKUKHUNE CLINCH

The opening 45 minutes saw both sides struggle to find a clinical edge despite several half-chances. Gastón Sirino and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo were central to Chiefs’ creative efforts, with Toaster Nsabata forced into several smart saves to keep Babina Noko in the game.

At the other end, Brandon Petersen was called into action just before the break, producing a superb save to deny a goal-bound header from Bright Ndlovu.

Chiefs coach made decisive moves at the start of the second half, introducing Thabo Cele and Reeve Frosler to stabilise the midfield and provide more width. However, it was the introduction of Morris and Vilakazi past the hour mark that ultimately broke Sekhukhune’s resistance.

The result ends a frustrating run of draws for the Soweto giants and ensures they will represent South Africa on the continent next season.
