Zambia extended their winning streak at the COSAFA Under-20 Women's Championship with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Botswana in South Africa where the hosts eventually eased to a 3-0 win over Lesotho in the second game on Friday.
Zambia, whose some players wore distinct black leggings, were in control right from the start at a deserted University of Johannesburg’s Soweto Campus ground. Botswana, led by coach Tapaphiwa Gaebolae, were reduced to speculative attempts from range and hardly matched the Zambians in speed and stamina.
Little wonder then that Charles Haalubono's girls went ahead barely in the first minute through winger Jacqueline Nambeya's goal. Defender Saliya Mwanza added the second on the half-hour mark and captain Mary Mbewe made it 3-0 with five minutes remaining before break.
The Zambians extended their lead in the 64th minute when a powerful shot was helped into the net by Botswana substitute defender Ivy Makgatau. Goals from Edith Phiri and Ruth Muwowo in the 78th and 83rd minutes sealed the win for the Young Copper Queens.
Zambia just need a point in their last match against Mozambique on Saturday to win the title whereas Botswana are out of the championship race after losing two consecutive games, including Wednesday’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Mozambique.
In a late kick-off at the same venue, South Africa eased to a 3-0 win over neighbours Lesotho. Defender Andrielle Mibe’s seventh-minute goal saw the Maunde Khumalo’s girls leading 1-0 at the break. Further strikes from Nobalwe Mdelwa and Gugu Mabelwa ensured the win for the hosts.
