Cyprus League: Ryan Mmaee returns to top scoring chart in Omonia victory

AC Omonia are on the verge of securing their first Cyprus League title since the 2020-21 season and their two African international forwards are a major reason why. Moroccan forward Ryan Mmaee scored both goals in a 2-0 victory at AEK Larnaca on Tuesday.

The Belgian-born goal scorer is now two goals clear of teammate and Cape Verde forward Willy Semedo after leading his team to victory. Mmaee now stands on 19 goals from 24 league matches while Semedo has 17 goals in 24 matches.

After surviving a difficult opening half hour without conceding, the leaders struck through the Moroccan on the counter-attack in the 32nd minute. Showing excellent control to take down a long ball over the top of the defense, Mmaee cleverly lobbed his finish over advancing AEK goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic.

His second goal was the product of another precision attack on the break from the visitors. Semedo slid a pass over to Muamer Tanković and the former Swedish international’s pass was perfect to find the run of Mmaee for a powerful finish past Alomerovic.

Omonia are now ten points clear of closest rivals Apollon Limassol with seven rounds remainining in the championship group, composed of six clubs. Thanks to the efforts of Mmaee and Semedo, the club have devastated opposition defenses with 69 goals from their 29 matches.

They are now unbeaten in their last six matches, and will next host APOEL on Saturday.
