Durban City FC frustrated by 10-man Stellenbosch in goalless stalemate

Durban City FC missed a golden opportunity to climb the Betway Premiership ladder on Friday night, playing out a frustrating 0-0 draw against a resilient 10-man Stellenbosch FC at Chatsworth Stadium.

Despite having a numerical advantage for the final 35 minutes of the match, the hosts could not find a way past Sage Stephens, leaving both sides to share the spoils in the only top-flight fixture of the evening.

MTHIYANE RED CARD CHANGES THE COMPLEXION

The match, which was largely a cagey affair in the first half, burst into life early in the second period due to a moment of indiscretion from the visitors.

In the 55th minute, Stellenbosch midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane was shown a straight red card following a reckless challenge on Thabo Nodada. The dismissal forced Steve Barker to reshuffle his pack, bringing on defensive reinforcements to preserve the point.

Durban City immediately looked to capitalise, with Jean Lwamba and Bokang Mokwena testing the Stellies backline, but the defensive partnership of Olisa Ndah and Thabo Moloisane remained resolute under pressure.

MISSED CHANCES COST THE HOSTS – DURBAN CITY FC

Durban City FC threw everything at the visitors in the closing stages, introducing the likes of Haashim Domingo, Letsie Koapeng, and Ronaldo Maarman to spark an offensive breakthrough.

Koapeng had perhaps the best chance to snatch all three points in the 89th minute, but his right-footed effort from the centre of the box flew agonisingly over the crossbar following a precise cross from Maarman.

Stellenbosch, despite their disadvantage, remained dangerous on the counter-attack. Langelihle Phili drew a magnificent save from Fredrick Asare in the 61st minute, while Tshegofatso Mabasa saw a header flash just wide of the post before being substituted for Ashley Cupido.

The result does little to aid Durban City’s aspirations for a top-six finish. While they remain in 6th place with 38 points, they failed to pull clear of Polokwane City, who sit level with them on points with two games remaining in the campaign.

For Stellenbosch, the hard-earned point sees them remain in 10th position with 33 points. While they will take heart from their defensive display, they remain three points adrift of 8th-placed Golden Arrows, making their quest for a Top Eight finish increasingly difficult.
