Betway Prem: Orbit College escape basement as Siwelele, Durban City share spoils

The Betway Premiership relegation battle and the race for top-eight positioning took centre stage on Tuesday night, as Orbit College FC secured a lifeline while Siwelele FC and Durban City FC played out a high-octane draw.

In a night marked by weather delays and dramatic shifts in the standings, the ‘Mswenko Boys’ were the big winners, climbing out of the red zone for the first time in weeks.

ORBIT COLLEGE FC BEAT MAGESI IN SESHEGO

Orbit College produced a gritty performance to defeat Magesi FC 2-1 at the Seshego Stadium, a result that effectively swapped their positions in the relegation dogfight.

The match was plagued by a nearly hour-long suspension due to inclement weather just 10 minutes in, but the delay failed to dampen Orbit College’s resolve. Lucky Malatsi broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, expertly turning home a Kobamelo Setlhodi cross. The visitors doubled their lead in the 37th minute through a moment of brilliance from Gomolemo Khoto, who rifled a left-footed strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Magesi pulled one back before the break via a Motsie Matima header, and despite hitting the woodwork twice in the second half through Sifiso Luthuli and Edmore Chirambadare, they could not find a leveller. The victory lifts Orbit to 14th, while Magesi drops into the precarious 15th-place playoff spot.

At the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium, Siwelele and Nedbank Cup champions Durban City delivered a 2-2 thriller. The headline was once again written by Congolese marksman Jean Lwamba, whose red-hot form continues to carry the visitors.

Lwamba opened the scoring in the sixth minute, but Siwelele responded almost immediately through Bohlale Ngwato’s first professional goal. The hosts took a 2-1 lead in the 58th minute when Ghampani Lungu finished off a Siphesihle Jeza assist, revisiting the combination that recently sunk Kaizer Chiefs.

However, Lwamba proved his class yet again, completing his brace in the 77th minute to ensure the spoils were shared. The draw keeps Durban City in 6th place, while Siwelele remains 9th as they prepare for a daunting trip to face Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend.

CHIPPA VS SEKHUKHUNE POSTPONED

The evening’s third scheduled fixture between Chippa United and Sekhukhune United fell victim to the elements. Due to heavy waterlogging at the Buffalo City Stadium, the match was postponed and has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 6, at 13h00.
