French Ligue 1 side Stade de Reims has named Samba Diawara as their permanent head coach. The former Mali international has a football career spanning in France and Belgium. Diawara, 46, has been acting as interim coach after Reims parted ways with Luka Elsner.

The managerial change makes Diawara the second African to actively coach in Ligue 1 after Senegalese Habib Beye, who took over Stade Rennes a few weeks back.

Reims are performing poorly in Ligue 1 and have yet to score a goal under their new trainer. They have not won a game since late November. Diawara will be tasked to change fortunes for the struggling side.

After his appointment, Diawara stated he is ready for the new chapter. "Today, the message I have with the players is clear: they will not see another face, they will not see another coach."

"They will have to deal with me and will have to convince me too. I have always had in mind to be the best assistant possible. From now on, I will have to learn another job but I am determined to do it and there are plenty of people who are ready to help me."

On his first assignment, Diawara is up against his fellow African Beye as Reims visit the Breton side Rennes on Friday, February 21st.

Only a point separates the two sides as Reims sits in 14th place, one spot and one point below Rennes.
