Nigeria’s national U-17 women’s team, popularly known as the Flamingos, are ramping up their technical preparations with two crucial friendly matches scheduled for this weekend.
These fixtures serve as a vital tuning exercise ahead of their highly anticipated 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifying showdown against Guinea.
The Akeem Busari-led side is slated to test its tactical mettle against Generation Next on Saturday, followed immediately by a clash with Nazareth Queens on Sunday. In a bid to simulate match-day conditions and maintain a consistent environment, both encounters are scheduled to take place at the Goal Project pitch located within the Moshood Abiola National Stadium complex in Abuja.
The atmosphere in the nation’s capital is reportedly focused and intense, as the majority of the invited starlets have already checked into the team’s Serob Legacy Hotel camp. The technical crew is expected to use this weekend’s double-header to assess the physical fitness and tactical cohesion of the squad before narrowing down the final selection for the international assignment.
The Flamingos are currently preparing for a pivotal second-round qualifying fixture against Guinea, which is set to take place next month. As per the current schedule, Guinea will play host to the first leg during the window of May 22 to 24. Nigeria will then look to leverage home-ground advantage when they host the return leg on May 30, 2026.
The stakes for this qualifying campaign are incredibly high, as the successful teams will secure a coveted spot at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The global showpiece is scheduled to be hosted on African soil in Morocco, running from October 17 to November 7, 2026.
Given Nigeria’s rich history in this competition—including a bronze-medal finish in the previous edition—Akeem Busari will be under pressure to ensure the team maintains its status as one of the continent’s most formidable powerhouses.
