Defending champions Les Aigles du Congo and TP Mazembe both recorded victories on Monday in DR Congo’s Linafoot playoffs to secure their place in the top two positions.
TPM goalkeeper Marc Diouf lived up to his reputation as the “penalty expert” on both ends of the pitch, with his spot kick standing as the match winner in the Ravens’ 1-0 victory over AS Simba at the Stade Kibassa Maliba in Lubumbashi.
The Senegalese keeper stepped up to finish the only goal of the match after powerful young forward Chadrack Bingi Belo was dragged down in the penalty area.
Simba are now struggling towards the bottom of the table, with only Celeste FC below them. Celeste fell 0-2 to Les Aigles du Congo in Kinshasa, leaving the reigning champions only one point back of Mazembe at the top of the table.
Jonathan Moba placed his header perfectly into the top corner for the club from the capital just after the half hour mark from a John Molingo corner kick. Paul Massey finished off the victory with a routine finish in the final moments of the match.
On Tuesday, FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo has an opportunity to move into third place with a victory when they face CS Don Bosco in Lubumbashi. Both teams are tied on seven points each, making the match a crucial encounter for their continental ambitions.
