Malawi’s 2026-2027 FDH Bank Premiership infant season has produced its second coaching casualty.

Former champions Kamuzu Barracks FC have pulled the trigger on head coach Tione Mhone and his deputy Joseph Chilapondwa over unsatisfactory results.

Second coach to be suspended in Malawi

Last week, Ekhaya FC also silently placed coach Enos Chatama on administrative leave.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, the Malawi Defence Force headquarters-based team says it has suspended the duo following a review of their performance.

“Kamuzu Barracks wishes to inform its supporters, stakeholders, and the general public that head coach Tione Mhone and assistant coach Joseph Chilapondwa have been placed on administrative leave with immediate effect following a review of the team’s performance,” reads the statement.

“The club has since appointed Kenwood Nkhoma as interim head coach until further notice. The club remains committed to achieving its goals and appreciates continued support from its fans and partners during this period.”

The price Mhone paid

Mhone has paid the price for presiding over a three-game FDH Premiership winless streak this season. The 2016 league champions lost 2-0 to Silver Strikers, 1-0 to Mitundu LUANAR FC, and then drew one-all with Karonga United.

Now is the turn of Nkhoma to start the audition for a permanent role when his side faces Creck Sporting Club at Champions Stadium in Dowa on the outskirts of Lilongwe on Saturday, 16 May 2026.
