Malawi: Bullets stun Wanderers to end losing streak

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets beat Mighty Wanderers 2-1 to end a four-game losing streak to the rivals in an ill-tempered match from Malawi’s top flight FDH Bank Premiership that produced three red cards in Lilongwe on Sunday.
Bullets captain Blessings Mpokera and striker Maxwell Gasten scored in either half with Promise Kamwendo pulling one back for the Nomads at a packed Bingu National Stadium.
Mpokera put the People’s Team ahead from the penalty spot five minutes into the game after a Nomads’ player had fouled striker Ephraim Kondowe.
The goal jolted Wanderers into action as they pushed for an equaliser before the break. Wanderers nearly equalised in the 48th minute but attacker Isaac Kaliati was unfortunate to see his effort bouncing off the bar after Gaddie Chirwa’s delivery from the right.
Two minutes later, the Nomads came knocking but once again an effort from Chirwa rebounded off the post once again. Bullets lead 1-0 at half time.
Missed opportunities came back to haunt Wanderers as Gasten extended Bullets lead with a 59th minute header from substitute Mologeni’s right flank corner kick.
A few minutes later, Bob Mpinganjira’s charges reduced the deficit through substitute Kamwendo’s strike from the penalty spot.

Boiling tempers lead to red cards

At that point tempers flared as Bullets bench remonstrated against referee Mayamiko Kanjere’s decisions. In the heat of the moment, Bullets team manager Noel Kaole was shown a red card.
There was more drama as Chirwa for Wanderers and Gasten of Bullets got straight marching orders after they fouled each other in an off the ball incident.

Form of Wanderers and Big Bullets going into Sunday’s derby

Bullets went into Sunday’s game having defeated MAFCO FC 1-0 the preview weekend and drawn 2-2 the other weekend.
On other hand, the Nomads only started their new season last weekend when they beat Creck Sporting Club 2-1.
Wanderers defeated The People’s Team 1-0 at this same Lilongwe venue on 18 April 2026 to lift the NBS Charity Shield trophy. That result notably marked four consecutive victories over their rivals dating back to last season.
In another game played on Sunday, Blue Eagles handed Silver Strikers their first defeat of the season in their fourth game, beating them 1-0 courtesy of Barnet Konyo’s 30th minute goal.
