Egyptian star Mohamed Salah opened his heart to speak about deeply personal aspects of his football journey, revealing the moments when he shed tears and those in which he lived the highest levels of happiness.
In an interview with Egypt’s ON Sport channel, the superstar popularly known as “Mo” did not hide his emotional connection to the game, confirming that he cried more than once because of football.
Salah specifically pointed to pivotal moments such as the Egypt vs. Congo match that sealed World Cup 2018 qualification after Egypt won 2-1, and the Egypt vs. Senegal match from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final which saw the Pharoahs fall short in a penalty kick shootout.
Salah also said he was close to tears during his team’s game against Tottenham, which they won and secured the English Premier League title for the 2024/2025 season.
He paused to reflect on Congo’s goal to make the score 1-1 in the final round of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Egypt and spoke about the moment when he collapsed to the ground after the goal, which meant Egypt was exiting World Cup qualifiers:
“I didn’t expect to celebrate the win afterwards. Before the game, I imagined a scenario where I would score three goals, a hat-trick, and we would qualify for the World Cup.”
“When we conceded the goal, I fell to the ground and was trying to motivate my teammates, but deep inside I couldn’t believe there would be another chance. I couldn’t motivate my teammates, so I was holding my head.”
Praise for coach Cúper – “One of the smartest”
On the subject of coaches, Salah gave special praise to Argentine coach Héctor Cúper, the head coach of Egypt during that match, describing him as one of the “smartest coaches” who ever led the Egyptian national team.
The happiest moments of the Pharaoh’s career
When asked about the happiest moments of his football life, Salah pointed to two unforgettable ones:
The first was the moment right after the Congo goal (when he scored the second goal in the stoppage time of the second half), and the second was the moment his team Liverpool won the Premier League title this season.
He confirmed that these two moments represent the achievement of two great accomplishments.
