Matchday 18 of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership marked the dramatic conclusion of the regular season, delivering a whirlwind of high-stakes results, late goals, and bitter relegation heartbreaks.
The final round of fixtures, contested across various centres in Nigeria on Wednesday, saw the championship picture finally gain clarity. Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, and Rivers Angels successfully secured their tickets from Group A, while FC Robo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Abia Angels advanced from Group B to complete the prestigious Super Six lineup.
In a standout result from Group A, Ekiti Queens claimed a notable 1-0 victory over league leaders Bayelsa Queens, courtesy of a clinical early strike from Joke Adeyemo. Despite the defeat, the “Prosperity Girls” remain one of the favourites heading into the playoffs.
Meanwhile, in Benin City, Edo Queens secured a vital 2-1 victory over Rivers Angels, a result that provides them with significant psychological momentum ahead of the Super Six tournament. Elsewhere, Heartland Queens edged Adamawa Queens 1-0 in a tightly contested affair. In the group’s final fixture, the two embattled sides, Pacesetter Queens and Naija Ratels, ended their top-flight campaigns with a 1-1 draw.
In Lagos, FC Robo Queens rounded off an impressive NWFL regular-season campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nasarawa Amazons. Goals from Opeyemi Ajakaye and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi gave the “Lagos Landladies” a comfortable cushion before Ayatsea Hembafan pulled a late consolation goal back for the visitors.
In a five-goal thriller, Dannaz Ladies edged Remo Stars Ladies 3-2 in one of the most entertaining encounters of the day. In Asaba, Delta Queens produced a dominant 3-0 display against Osun Babes, while in a shock result, Ahudiyannem Queens stunned Abia Angels with a narrow 1-0 away win in Aba. Finally, Sunshine Queens ended their season on a positive note by securing a 2-0 victory over Confluence Queens.
Super Six and Relegation Confirmed
With the regular season officially in the books, the Super Six lineup is locked in. However, the conclusion of the season also brought the harsh reality of the drop zone. Pacesetter Queens and Naija Ratels have been relegated from Group A, while Sunshine Queens, Osun Babes, and Confluence Queens will drop down to the lower tier from Group B.
Attention now shifts to the highly anticipated NWFL Super Six, where Nigeria’s elite clubs will battle for the ultimate league crown and the coveted qualification spots for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
