Pirates reclaim summit with historic double over AmaZulu

Orlando Pirates surged to the top of the Betway Premiership standings on Saturday afternoon, dismantling AmaZulu FC 3-0 at a vibrant Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto.

The victory carries immense historical weight, marking the first time in 22 years that the Buccaneers have completed a league “sweep” over the KZN outfit, with their last double dating back to the 2003/04 campaign.

The win moves Abdeslam Ouaddou’s men to 58 points from 25 matches, two points clear of Mamelodi Sundowns, although the Brazilians still hold two games in hand.

Pirates duo Mbuthuma and Appollis Set the Pace

The Buccaneers showed their intent from the opening whistle, forcing AmaZulu goalkeeper Olwethu Mzimela into a series of early saves. The deadlock was finally broken in the 14th minute when Yamela Mbuthuma rose highest in the centre of the box to power a header into the bottom left corner, courtesy of a pinpoint cross from Tshepang Moremi.

Pirates continued to dominate possession and territory throughout the first half. Just as the fourth official announced two minutes of added time, Oswin Appollis doubled the lead. The midfielder unleashed a clinical right-footed shot from outside the box that nestled into the bottom left corner, leaving Mzimela with no chance after a neat setup by Relebohile Mofokeng.

Mofokeng Masterclass Wraps Up the Points

The second half followed a similar pattern of Pirates’ dominance. In the 59th minute, the provider turned scorer. Relebohile Mofokeng produced a moment of individual brilliance, curling a right-footed shot from distance into the top left corner to make it 3-0.

Pirates had a golden opportunity to add a fourth in the 75th minute when Taariq Fielies was penalised for a handball in the area. However, Mofokeng saw his penalty strike the woodwork, a rare blemish in an otherwise flawless performance.

Despite a late flurry of substitutions—including the introduction of Sipho Mbule and Patrick Maswanganyi—Pirates remained compact at the back. Sipho Chaine was rarely troubled, though he produced a solid save in the 81st minute to deny Athini Maqokola.

The match ended on a slightly sombre note with a lengthy injury delay involving Mzimela, but the result was already beyond doubt.

Title Race Implications

With only five fixtures remaining for the Buccaneers, the pressure shifts back to Chloorkop. Pirates’ unbeaten run since February remains intact, and their tally of 24 goals in their last eight games highlights a team hitting peak form at the perfect moment.

Orbit College And Marumo Gallants Drop Critical Points

Meanwhile, the battle for survival and a top-eight finish saw mixed results across the country on Saturday. In Rustenburg, Golden Arrows staged a clinical second-half comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Orbit College FC, further entrenching the hosts in the relegation mire.

After Sede Dion opened the scoring for Arrows, veteran Ben Motshwari briefly levelled for Orbit, only for Khulekani Shezi to snatch the winner in the 69th minute. The result lifts Abafana Bes’thende to seventh, while Orbit College remains precariously placed in 15th after 15 games.

In Bloemfontein, Marumo Gallants and Siwelele played out a frustrating goalless draw at the Dr Molemela Stadium. The match was defined by a 50th-minute red card shown to Siwelele’s Thato Letshedi, but despite playing with a numerical advantage for nearly the entire second half, Gallants were unable to find a breakthrough. The stalemate leaves Gallants in 14th position, still dangerously close to the drop zone, while Siwelele remains steady in 10th.
