Steven Gerrard: ‘Salah sending message’ with social media posts

Liverpool FC legend Steven Gerrard has weighed in on the comments of Mohamed Salah regarding the team’s poor performance during the 2025-26 Premier League season.

The Egyptian superstar stunned the football world on Saturday when he vowed to ensure that the club retains its Premier League glory and compete in Europe. Gerrard, speaking as a TNT TV pundit, said his analysis of the Egyptian’s tweet shows that there were problems in the Liverpool dressing room.

“I think he is sending a message to the outside that things in the dressing are not right,” Gerrard said. “The identity is gone. And it is really hurting him to see in front of his own eyes.”

The Liverpool FC legend said he was surprised by Salah’s remarks and their timing.

“I am surprised with the timing with one game to go, the last game for Liverpool. That is quite damning.”

The 35-year-old said this via his official Facebook page in a reaction to Liverpool FC’s  4-2 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, 16 May 2026.

Salah makes vow

Despite announcing that he is leaving the club at the end of the season, and with just one game remaining before the end of the 2025-2026 Premier League season, the Egyptian promised to ensure his club’s return to form.

The Pharaohs’ legend released the statement on Saturday, a day after outgoing Premier League champions suffered a 4-2 loss to Aston Villa on Friday, 15 May.

In the statement, Salah described the team’s inconsistent performance as unacceptable. The statement read:

“Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.

Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family. I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on.

As I’ve always said, qualifying to next season’s Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen.”

Liverpool risk missing out on UEFA Champions League football

Arne Slot’s side lie in fifth place with a meeting against Brentford FC on Sunday, 24 May being their last fixture of the Premier League season.

Victory over Brentford would increase Liverpool’s tally to 63 points; not enough to ensure UEFA Champions League football unless Villa, who already have 62 points, lose to Manchester City on Sunday.
