U-17 AFCON: Uganda Cubs face defining test against Ivory Coast in final Group B showdown

The Uganda Cubs return to action on Tuesday evening knowing their future at the ongoing U-17 Africa Cup of Nations could be determined in a decisive clash against Ivory Coast in Rabat, Morocco.

With the final round of Group B matches approaching, Uganda still remains in contention for a place in the quarter-finals and a possible ticket to the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.

The encounter will be played at Field 11 of the Mohammed VI Complex in Rabat with kick-off scheduled for 5:00 PM UTC – Moroccan time.

Uganda opened its campaign in impressive fashion with a convincing 3-0 victory over DR Congo, immediately signalling intent at the continental showpiece. The Cubs combined attacking flair, composure and defensive discipline to secure maximum points in their opening fixture and boost confidence within the camp.

However, the second outing proved more difficult as Uganda suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Cameroon in a closely contested battle. That result left the Cubs third in the Group B standings heading into the final round of fixtures, with qualification still firmly within reach.

Massive Challenge Awaits At AFCON

Uganda now faces an Ivory Coast side that has already booked its place in the quarter-finals after winning its opening two matches.

The young Elephants defeated Cameroon 2-0 before grinding out a 1-0 victory over DR Congo to move top of the group with six points at AFCON.

Their defensive organisation and ability to manage difficult moments have made them one of the standout teams in the tournament so far.

Despite already securing qualification and a FIFA U-17 World Cup berth, Ivory Coast will still be targeting a perfect group-stage record as they prepare for the knockout rounds.

Cubs Eye Historic Progress At AFCON

For Uganda, the mission remains straightforward: deliver a strong performance against one of the tournament favourites and keep hopes of progression alive.

The Cubs will once again depend on the energy, fighting spirit and attacking threat that inspired their dominant win over DR Congo earlier in the competition.

A positive result could dramatically alter the final Group B standings and hand Uganda a historic breakthrough at the U-17 AFCON.

First-Ever Meeting

Interestingly, Tuesday’s AFCON showdown will mark the first official meeting between the Uganda and Ivory Coast U-17 national teams.

At the previous edition of the tournament in Morocco, Uganda exited at the group stage while Ivory Coast went on to finish third overall.

The Cubs now have another opportunity to demonstrate their growth and prove they can compete with Africa’s elite youth football nations.
