UPL: Top and bottom battles ignite as Kitara host Calvary, Lugazi face SC Villa

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League match day 24 climaxes on Wednesday with two crucial fixtures that could shape both the title race and the relegation fight.

Kitara head into the clash after a frustrating run that has seen them draw with Vipers SC and narrowly lose to KCCA FC, results that slowed their momentum in the race for the top spots.

Despite recent struggles, Kitara will draw confidence from the reverse fixture, where Crispus Asiko’s lone strike secured victory in Midigo.

Historically, they also hold the upper hand, winning two of the three meetings between the sides.

Head coach Wasswa Bbosa has called for sharper finishing, pointing to missed opportunities in recent matches. With 47 points, a win would take Kitara to 50 and keep them firmly in contention for a top-two finish with only a handful of games remaining.

However, they will have to cope without injured right-back Edward Namasa. For Calvary FC, the situation is far more desperate.

Rooted at the bottom with just nine points, another defeat would push them closer to relegation, leaving their survival hopes hanging by a thread.

Meanwhile in Najjembe, Lugazi FC welcome SC Villa in a fixture loaded with contrasting ambitions.

Lugazi are fighting to climb out of danger, while Villa are chasing a strong finish in the upper tier of the table.

The hosts come into the match winless in seven outings and were held to a goalless draw by Calvary in their last game.

Their injury list remains a concern, with several key players sidelined, while Derrick Mwanje misses out through suspension.

SC Villa, on the other hand, arrive with momentum. They are unbeaten in five matches and recently held leaders Vipers SC to a 1-1 draw.

The reverse fixture between the two sides ended goalless, but Villa will be aiming for a more decisive outcome this time.

Villa boast attacking threats in Patrick Jonah Kakande, Hassan Mubiru, Najib Yiga, and Frank Ssebufu, while goalkeeper David Lukwago has been a consistent presence between the posts. However, their away form raises questions, with all their defeats this season coming on the road.

For Lugazi, the task is clear tighten up defensively and make chances count. A win could lift them further away from the relegation zone, while SC Villa know victory could see them climb as high as third, depending on results elsewhere.
