Ahead of the trip to London, the stand-in trainer described the prospect of meeting the Super Eagles and other giants as an opportunity for his side to learn and grow.
“We are approaching it with seriousness and ambition,” he told the Zimbabwe Football Association media.
“Playing against strong opposition like Nigeria, as well as Jamaica and India, provides a good test for the team. These are the kind of high-quality matches that help players grow and give us a clear picture of where we are.”
The man, who ascended to the Warriors’ hot seat on Monday 26 April when his former boss Marian Mario Marinica resigned, described Nigeria as a quality side with top players.
“Nigeria is a top side with quality players, so we respect them,” Tembo added. “But at the same time, we believe in our squad. Preparation will be key — organisation, discipline and making sure the players understand their roles. It’s an opportunity for us to compete and showcase our strength.”
The former South Africa’s SuperSport United and Sekhukhune United handler said he has faith in the depth of the Warriors squad which comprises the likes of United Kingdom-based skipper Marvelous Nakamba.
“We have a good mix of talent. There is quality in the local league, strong players based in South Africa, and others playing in the UK and beyond. Our task is to bring them together, build unity and create a team that plays with purpose and pride,” he said.
“This is a special moment for us as a nation. We are calling on all Zimbabweans in the UK to come out in their numbers and support the team. Your presence and energy can make a big difference. Let’s make it a memorable occasion together and show the world what Zimbabwean football is about.”
Organised to celebrate AfroCentric and global diaspora communities, the tournament will see pool the Warriors, the Super Eagles, India and Jamaica from 26 to 30 May 2026.
Zimbabwe and Nigeria will set the Unity Cup ball rolling with a semifinal meeting at The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic FC, on 26 May 2026. Kick off is 7:30pm.
Nigeria won the inaugural Unity Cup held in 2025 in Brentford.
