UPL: KCCA boss Ssenyondo calls for performance worth the badge against Vipers

With the title race tightening, all eyes shift to Lugogo where KCCA FC host Vipers SC in a defining Uganda Premier League (UPL) Matchday 26 clash under the floodlights on Wednesday night.

Separated by seven points at the summit, the stakes could hardly be higher. Vipers SC lead the standings with 58 points, while KCCA FC sit second on 51.

Victory for the hosts would significantly close the gap and reignite the title charge with just four games left to play.

But beyond the numbers and permutations, KCCA’s approach has been driven by a clear message from the bench.

KCCA coach speaks ahead of crucial UPL clash

Co-head coach Brian Ssenyondo struck a determined tone ahead of the encounter, emphasizing both responsibility and readiness:

“We know exactly what this game represents. We are playing at home, and our fans deserve a performance that reflects the weight of this jersey. We have prepared well for this fixture, and we shall give a deserved performance.”

That sense of purpose comes as KCCA look to bounce back after a demanding trip to Yumbe, with the technical team focusing on recovery and sharpening for what is widely regarded as the modern-day pinnacle of Ugandan football.

The reverse fixture still lingers in memory, with Vipers edging the first round meeting 1-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium.

However, Lugogo presents a different challenge altogether, where KCCA will lean on home support in what is expected to be a vibrant, high-intensity atmosphere.

Historically, this fixture has been tightly contested. Across 33 previous meetings in league and cup competitions, KCCA have registered 9 wins, with 8 matches ending in draws.

The Cityzens have managed 35 goals in that run, underlining their ability to trouble the Venoms despite recent setbacks.

Form coming into the game offers a mixed picture for both sides. KCCA’s recent run has seen flashes of resilience, including narrow wins over Entebbe UPPC and Kitara, but also setbacks against SC Villa and Calvary, alongside an Uganda Cup exit on penalties to URA FC.

Vipers, on the other hand, have shown greater consistency, picking up commanding wins against UPPC and Buhimba, while remaining difficult to break down in tightly contested fixtures, including their Uganda Cup progression.

Recent head-to-head meetings slightly tilt in favor of the visitors, who have claimed multiple wins in the last five encounters, though KCCA will draw confidence from their ability to compete in this fixture.

As the title race edges toward its climax, Wednesday night’s showdown is more than just three points it’s a statement opportunity.

And if Ssenyondo’s words are anything to go by, KCCA are fully aware of what is required when the whistle blows at Lugogo.

Elsewhere on Matchday 26, Buhimba United Saints host Lugazi in Butema, Entebbe UPPC face Calvary in Bugonga, and Police take on UPDF in Kamwokya, with all three fixtures kicking off earlier at 4pm.
