Azam FC eye crucial victory against Namungo in top three push

Azam FC will be aiming to strengthen their bid for a top-three finish in the NBC Premier League when they host Namungo FC this evening at the Azam Complex, with kickoff scheduled for 18:30 EAT.

The Dar es Salaam-based side heads into the encounter knowing that maximum points are essential in their pursuit of a CAF interclub competition spot next season. Currently sitting on 40 points from 20 matches, Azam remain within touching distance of second-placed Simba SC, who have 43 points.

Azam’s consistency has been notable this season, having avoided defeat in all 20 of their league matches so far, registering 10 draws and 10 wins. Maintaining that unbeaten run will be a key target as they face a Namungo side eager to improve their standing.

Namungo FC, who sit in 10th place with 23 points, have recorded five wins, eight draws, and seven defeats from their 20 matches. While their form has been mixed, they remain capable of causing problems, especially in tightly contested fixtures.

The reverse fixture between the two sides earlier this season ended in a 1-1 draw, underlining the competitive nature of this matchup. However, Azam have enjoyed the upper hand in recent meetings, remaining unbeaten in their last five league encounters against Namungo.

In terms of recent form, Azam appear to have the momentum, having secured three wins and two draws in their last five league matches. Namungo, on the other hand, have drawn three and lost two in the same period, highlighting their struggle to secure victories.

Ibenge Rallies Azam FC Fans Ahead of Crucial Clash.

Speaking ahead of the match, Azam FC head coach Florent Ibenge acknowledged the challenge awaiting his team but expressed confidence in their ability to deliver.

“We are going to play a tough match against Namungo because they are a good team. We also have a strong team, and we need the win, so we will fight,” said Ibenge.

Reflecting on the first-round meeting, he added: “We drew in the first round, which shows that matches between these teams are always difficult. But we will make sure we perform well today.”

The Congolese tactician also called on fans to turn up in large numbers to support the team. “I urge Azam supporters to come in big numbers and be our 12th player to give us support,” he said.

Following this fixture, Azam FC will travel to face TRA United on May 8 before returning home to host Pamba Jiji on May 14 and Tanzania Prisons on May 22, in what promises to be a decisive run-in for their season ambitions.
