NBC Premier League: Azam with another clean sheet, Coastal Union earn important victory

Azam FC’s impregnable defense put up a fifth consecutive clean sheet in all competitions while Coastal Union moved away from relegation danger against underachievers Singida Black Stars on Saturday in Tanzania’s NBC Premier League.

Legendary Congolese coach Florent Ibengé and his Azam FC team continue to be well on course for qualification to CAF interclub competition next season after a 3-0 victory at Mtibwa Sugar.

Star player Feisal Salum scored twice and assisted Jephte Kitambala in the victory for a club who have only lost once in 2026. In domestic matches, they remain undefeated so far this year.

Salum opened the scoring inside ten minutes with a header before setting up Congolese striker Kitambala to leave the score a 2-0 in favor of the visitors through twenty minutes. A brilliant assist from Ashraf Kibeku left Salum with only the goalkeeper to beat for the third goal close to the hour mark.

Azam are only two points back of second place Simba SC, who could very well drop points in Sunday’s massive Kariakoo Derby against leaders Young Africans. Yanga are five points clear of their rivals ahead of the clash.

Singida Black Stars, whose hopes of taking a step forward against Tanzania’s elite clubs continue to be unsuccessful after spending plenty of money, continued their inconsistent form with a 1-2 defeat against a Coastal Union side in need of a positive result. A brilliant start with two goals in the opening quarter hour was enough for the hosts to hold on despite a red card at the end of the first half.

Singida conceded a penalty kick just before the opening minute ended, allowing Maabad Maulid to convert from the spot to open the scoring. Bakari Msium doubled the advantage with only sixteen minutes gone to leave visitors Singida in a difficult position.

Black Stars did have an opportunity to get back in the match after a moment of madness from Coastal Union goalkeeper Wilbol Maseke, who slapped an opponent after claiming a corner kick into his penalty area just before halftime. But while Emmanuel Keyekeh’s penalty kick early in the second half pulled a goal back, the CAF Confederation Cup participants failed to capitalize on their advantage.

Singida are in seventh place, eleven points outside of the top-3 and qualification for CAF interclub competition via the league. For a club with big ambition, winning Tanzania’s CRDB Bank Federation Cup may very well be the only way they can return to the CAF Confederation Cup after bowing out at the group stage this season.

Friday’s results featured a victory for TRA United at Tanzania Prisons while Dodoma Jiji and Namungo FC played to a scoreless draw.
