The Rwanda national football team, Amavubi, will today learn their opponents for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) conducts the official draw in Cairo, Egypt.
The draw is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 19, at 3:00 p.m. local time in Cairo (12:00 GMT), marking an important moment for Rwanda as the country begins its journey toward qualification for Africa’s biggest football tournament.
CAF confirmed that 48 nations will participate in the qualifiers and will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The qualifying campaign will determine the teams that will join hosts Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda at the TotalEnergies AFCON 2027 finals, which are set to be staged from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

Rwanda has been placed in Pot 3 ahead of the draw, meaning Amavubi could face some of the continent’s strongest football nations in the qualification process. The seeding also opens the possibility of Rwanda being paired with traditional African powerhouses from Pot 1 and Pot 2 as they aim to secure a place at the continental showpiece.
According to CAF’s qualification format, the top two teams from each group will qualify automatically for the tournament. However, groups that include one of the three host nations, Kenya, Tanzania, or Uganda, will only produce one additional qualified team because the hosts have already secured automatic qualification.
The draw is expected to attract attention from football fans across Africa, with many eager to see the potential blockbuster clashes that could emerge during the qualifiers.
For Rwanda, the upcoming campaign presents another opportunity to chase a return to the AFCON finals and continue building under the national team setup. Amavubi will be hoping for a favorable draw that can improve their chances of competing for a spot at the prestigious tournament.
The qualification matches are scheduled to be played during FIFA international windows between September 2026 and March 2027. Teams will compete in home and away fixtures, with only the best-performing sides progressing to the finals.
As anticipation builds ahead of the ceremony in Cairo, Rwanda’s football fraternity will closely follow the draw to discover the path Amavubi must navigate in pursuit of AFCON 2027 qualification.
