The stakes for Sunday’s Soweto Derby have been cranked up a notch. Following Mamelodi Sundowns’ recent stumble, Orlando Pirates attacker Andre de Jong admits there is a “good pressure” on the Buccaneers to seize their golden opportunity.
Sundowns’ 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC on Wednesday has blown the Betway Premiership title race wide open, leaving the Sea Robbers with a chance to tighten their grip on the summit at a sold-out FNB Stadium this afternoon at 15:00 CAT.
Speaking at the Derby press conference in midweek, De Jong didn’t shy away from the championship implications of the clash against Kaizer Chiefs. With only five games remaining, the margin for error has evaporated.
“Everyone wants to win it [the league] for our fanbase,” De Jong told journalists. “But also the landscape of the league at the moment, obviously it’s tight after last night’s result [Sundowns’ draw]. So, I think going into this game, there is that added pressure, but in a good way.”
For the New Zealand international, playing for a club of Pirates’ stature means embracing these high-pressure scenarios. The goal is simple: win the Derby and force Sundowns to play catch-up.
“I think challenging for the league is where Pirates want to be,” he added. “With five games to go, I think maximum points at this stage of the season is really important. Also, Sundowns play after us on Sunday, so hopefully we can be in top spot going into the new week.”
While the league title is the ultimate prize, the immediate hurdle is a rejuvenated Amakhosi side. The match kicks off at 15:00 on Sunday, and with the “Sold Out” signs already up, the atmosphere is expected to be electric.
The Buccaneers will be looking to do the double over their rivals this season, knowing that three points on Sunday could be the most significant step yet toward ending their league title drought.
