The stage is set, the sold-out signs are up, and the atmosphere at the FNB Stadium is reaching a fever pitch. Today’s Soweto Derby at 15:00 CAT is more than just a clash for bragging rights; it is a high-stakes chess match with massive implications for the Betway Premiership title race and the hunt for CAF inter-club spots.
As Orlando Pirates look to protect their slender one-point lead at the summit, and Kaizer Chiefs aim to cement their resurgence under Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze, two club legends have weighed in on the tactical battle and the individuals who could decide the fate of the capital.

For the Buccaneers, the mission is clear: win to stay ahead of a lurking Mamelodi Sundowns. Speaking to FARPost, Pirates legend Eugene Zwane believes the Soweto Derby result will be dictated by a clinical frontline that has become the most feared in the country.
Zwane highlighted the incredible synergy between Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis, a duo that has racked up a staggering 29 goal contributions between them this season. Mofokeng (11 goals, 8 assists) and Appollis (11 goals, 9 assists) have become the creative heartbeat of Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side.
“You look at ‘Rele’ and Appollis; they have about 29 goal contributions for the team. This shows how dangerous and important they are for Pirates,” Zwane told FARPost.
He also pointed to Tshepang Moremi as the third prong of an attack that has propelled the Sea Robbers to an eight-match unbeaten run.

While Pirates boast the league’s most inform attack, former Amakhosi goalkeeper Brian Baloyi believes Chiefs have the “X-factor” players capable of silencing the FNB Stadium in the Soweto Derby. “Spiderman” pointed to the striking duo of Flavio da Silva and Glody Lilepo as the men to deliver a fatal blow.
Da Silva leads Chiefs with nine goals this season, while Lilepo follows closely with eight. Baloyi insists their mental toughness will be key.
“[Glody] Lilepo and [Flavio] Da Silva’s confidence can work on Sunday. They have arrogance,” Baloyi told FARPost. “They are not afraid of making mistakes. Those two guys can hurt Pirates in the Soweto Derby.”
Eugene Zwane, despite his Pirates ties, noted that Amakhosi have “gotten their mojo back” in recent weeks. He singled out Mduduzi Shabalala and the youthful energy of Wandile Duba as potential game-changers, while highlighting Lebohang Maboe as the stabilising force in the middle of the park.
The numbers tell the story of two giants in top gear:
Orlando Pirates: Unbeaten in eight matches; sitting 1st with 58 points.
Kaizer Chiefs: Unbeaten in six matches; sitting 3rd and looking to end a Derby league drought dating back to February 2023.
A Pirates victory would be a massive step toward their first league title in over a decade, while a Chiefs win would not only throw the title race wide open for Sundowns but also secure the Glamour Boys’ path back to continental football.
At 15:00 CAT, the talk stops and the action begins in the Soweto Derby. Will the creative brilliance of Mofokeng and Appollis rule the day, or will the “arrogance” of Da Silva and Lilepo reclaim Soweto for the Gold and Black?
