FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup [Q]: Sampson and Asante target Uganda scalp

Ghana significantly brightened their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup following a gritty comeback victory over Uganda last weekend.

The Black Princesses fought back from a goal down to eventually defeat Uganda 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium, with the crucial reverse fixture scheduled to take place between 9–10 May.

With the team now on the road for the second leg, Ghana head coach Charles Sampson has expressed immense confidence in his side’s ability to eliminate Uganda.

“The feeling has been very great; we had another plan for that game that didn’t really work for us, but to show that character and resilience in the second half brought back the spirit we expect in the team,” Charles Sampson stated before the team’s departure.

“So, going to Uganda now, we are travelling with a very good mindset to be able to either maintain or further increase the margin that we currently have.

“We started this journey a long time ago, so we are in the right frame of mind heading to Uganda.

“Now we are going there with a mindset of total discipline and a total work rate that is beyond normal because we know that we will definitely need that.”

Black Princesses defender Precious Asante also expressed her confidence ahead of the second-leg qualifier against the Ugandan side.

“I want to say we are well-organised and fully determined to go for the win. This is our last qualifying round, and we want to win and secure the ticket to Poland.

“The pressure is on them because we won in our home, and we are hoping to win in their home as well so that we can officially get the ticket to the World Cup.”

The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is set to take place in Poland this September, with four African countries earning CAF’s designated slots.

This upcoming edition will mark the very first time that Poland has hosted a FIFA women’s tournament.
