Gor Mahia have announced the new date for the eagerly-awaited Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League Mashemeji derby against their bitter rivals, AFC Leopards, will take place on June 1, 2025.

The 97th derby between Kenya’s most successful clubs comes at a time when K’Ogalo are fighting to win a third consecutive crown. Having won a record 21st league title last season, Gor Mahia are among the favourites to be champions again this season.

Gor Mahia official Sally Bolo confirmed the news by calling upon their fans to paint the town green when the two giants face off in the second-round fixture. The first round fixture between the two sides ended in a 0-0 draw.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the Mashemeji Derby Needs No Invitation. It’s a Matter of Pride. Forget the noise, whether or not the league is decided, the Mashemeji Derby never loses its fire. This is more than a match; it’s a battle for pride, history, and bragging rights between two of Kenya’s biggest football families,” explained Bolo.

“Gor Mahia vs AFC Leopards is not just a fixture. It’s tradition. It’s rivalry. It’s community. Mark your calendars: 1st June 2025. Let us paint the town green and blue. Let the drums roll, the chants rise, and the stadium shake. Tell a friend to tell a friend, this is one derby you can’t afford to miss. Come one, come all.”

As of last season, Gor Mahia have won the Kenyan Premier League a record 21 times, while Leopards have 12 league titles to their name, and the two clubs have been bitter rivals since they first locked horns on May 5, 1968.

Gor Mahia have dominated the derby in recent years, with Ingwe playing catch-up. As per the records, the last six matches have seen Ingwe manage only one win against K’Ogalo.

Last season, it was K’Ogalo, who went home smiling after sealing a double over their rivals. In the first-round meeting, Gor Mahia secured a 2-0 win before registering a 1-0 victory in the second-round meeting en route to winning a record 21st league title.
