Gor Mahia inch closer to FKF Premier League title after victory

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia moved closer to sealing another record-breaking title following their deserved 3-1 win against Murang’a Seal in an FKF Premier League fixture at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.

After their title chasing rivals AFC Leopards won 2-1 on Saturday against Kakamega Homeboyz, Gor Mahia knew nothing less than a win could put them within the reach of their 22nd league title.

The pressure was much for Gor Mahia, who had seen their lead at the top of the 18-team league table cut to two points with three matches left to conclude the season.

Ben Stanley put Gor Mahia ahead

Gor Mahia threw everything to Murang’a Seal in the opening exchanges and they took the lead in the 18th minute courtesy of Ben Stanley.

The Kenya national team player sneaked past Murang’a defenders before slotting home a pass from Samuel Kapen.

However, Joe Waithira drew Murang’a Seal level in the 32nd minute to silence Gor Mahia faithful, who had thronged to rally behind their team.

The second half saw Gor Mahia remain dangerous and they grabbed the second when Shariff Musa, finished a superb throw-in delivery from Kapen in the 52nd minute.

Kapen almost made it 3-1 for Gor Mahia but saw his effort go inches wide. But Gor Mahia were not to wait for long to keep the game beyond doubt after substitute and Ghanaian import Ebenezer Assifuah wrapped up the business in the 77th minute.

With two matches now left, Gor Mahia are top with 68 points, four more than second-placed AFC Leopards. Gor Mahia’s remaining matches will see them take on Mara Sugar, and Nairobi United. For AFC Leopards, they will face APS Bomet, and Bidco United.
