Record-breaking Pirates reserves secure historic DDC title

The ‘Class of 2026′ have etched their names into the history books, securing Orlando Pirates’ first-ever DStv Diski Challenge title with a clinical 2-0 win over rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

In an electric atmosphere at the Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the young Buccaneers didn’t just win the league—they dominated it. Finishing the campaign with a record-breaking 75 points, the reserves have now laid down the gauntlet for the first team to follow in their footsteps as the senior title race reaches its own fever pitch.

Entering the final day at the summit, Pirates knew a draw would be enough, but they played with the arrogance of champions. After weathering an early Sundowns storm—kept at bay by a brilliant Bayanda Zulu save—the breakthrough finally arrived three minutes before the interval.

Towering centre-back Christian Derbyshire rose highest to power home a header, sending the Soweto faithful into raptures.

The pressure didn’t stop there. In the dying embers of the first half, Oratile Rantasi was hauled down inside the area, leaving Mpho Padime to step up and coolly slot home from the spot. It was a goal that effectively ended the contest and ignited the celebrations in the stands.

Sundowns emerged for the second half with “renewed vigour,” but they found a brick wall in the form of Derbyshire and Moses Mphekgoane. Despite a rare lapse that almost gifted Bennet Mokoena a tap-in, the Pirates backline remained unshakeable.

There was even time for late drama when Seth Green won a second penalty for the hosts, but Jabulani Mokone saw his effort saved by Nqobani Biyela. It mattered little; the damage was already done.

This was a victory built on consistency, marked by a historic 24 wins across the campaign. As the final whistle sparked scenes of jubilation, the message to the senior side was clear: the blueprint for success has been drafted.

With the first team currently locked in a high-stakes battle at the top of the Betway Premiership, the academy stars have provided the ultimate inspiration. The trophy is back in Soweto, and the ‘Class of 2026’ has proven that when the pressure is at its highest, this club knows how to deliver.
