Worku hails Azam’s grit after hard-fought win over Namungo

Azam FC assistant coach Addis Worku has praised his team’s resilience after they secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Namungo FC in the NBC Premier League, a result that keeps them firmly in contention for a top-two finish.

Speaking on behalf of head coach Florent Ibenge, Worku admitted the match was far from easy, particularly in the opening stages.

“The game against Namungo was very difficult, especially in the first half,” Worku said. “Namungo are a team that defends very well, and they made things hard for us.”

Azam struggled to impose themselves early on but found a breakthrough after tactical adjustments at halftime. Worku highlighted the impact of those changes, which allowed the Chamazi-based side to take control of proceedings.

“After making some changes, we came back into the game and managed to control it. The players fought hard to make sure we get three important points,” he added.

The decisive moment came when forward Jephte Kitambala was fouled inside the penalty area, earning his team a spot-kick. Star midfielder Feisal Salum calmly converted from the penalty spot, sending goalkeeper Abraham Suleiman the wrong way to score the only goal of the match.

The goal marked Salum’s 10th of the season, placing him at the top of the league’s Golden Boot race and underlining his importance to Azam’s title ambitions.

Worku Cites Fixture Pressure as Azam Shift Focus to TRA Clash.

Despite the victory, Worku pointed to the demanding fixture schedule as a growing challenge for the squad.

“The schedule is tough. We are playing every two or three days, and there is very little time to recover,” he explained.

Attention now shifts to their upcoming away fixture against Tanzania Revenue Authority United, which Worku expects to be another stern test.

“We are going to play away against TRA United. It will be another difficult match, but we will do everything to make sure we get three points,” he said.

The win sees Azam FC move level on 43 points with second-placed Simba SC, who still have a game in hand. Both sides remain five points behind league leaders Young Africans SC, keeping the title race tightly contested as the season progresses.
